Addressing the r/henna conversation about Golecha
The 2023 r/henna thread about Golecha henna, what it actually said, what was right, what was wrong, and what we've done since.
In June 2023, a thread was posted on r/henna asking about Golecha henna. It has been cited many times since. This article is our direct, evidence-based response.
What the thread actually said
The thread discussed a user’s experience with an “instant henna” cone sold as Golecha. The poster raised concerns about the formulation and noted that the paste didn’t behave like traditional henna.
The r/henna community’s responses were largely concerned about “instant henna” in general, which has a reputation in the henna-artist community because cheap formulations sometimes contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a chemical that can cause severe skin reactions.
The thread’s automod flagged the word “Golecha” in subsequent posts and added Golecha to a list of “suppliers to research carefully.”
What the thread got right
- The concern about cheap instant henna containing PPD is legitimate and important. Cheap or counterfeit instant henna products have caused real injuries.
- The caution about “black henna” temporary tattoos is correct and important. These products often contain PPD at concentrations much higher than regulated hair dyes.
What the thread got wrong
The thread conflated the brand name “Golecha” with any product sold under that name. This is the core error, and it is one we are actively working to correct.
Authentic Golecha henna — manufactured by Golecha Naturals Pvt Ltd in Delhi — is a different product from anything sold by counterfeit sellers. Authentic Golecha henna is:
- PPD-free
- Ammonia-free
- Halal-certified
- GMP-certified
- Does not contain any banned or restricted ingredients
The r/henna automod’s flag is based on a list maintained by a small group of volunteer moderators. It is not based on independent lab testing, regulatory action, or any formal determination. The flag conflates counterfeit product with authentic product.
What we’ve done since 2023
Since the 2023 thread, Golecha has:
- Published full ingredient transparency on this blog. See Golecha henna ingredients explained.
- Provided Certificates of Analysis (COAs) to commercial buyers on request.
- Published a public list of authorized sellers and known unauthorized sellers. See our authenticity page.
- Documented counterfeit sellers for brand-protection action.
- Engaged with henna artists to share our formulation philosophy and answer questions about instant henna safety.
What we’d like the r/henna community to consider
The r/henna automod currently flags the word “Golecha” as a “supplier to research carefully.” This conflates authentic Golecha henna with counterfeit product. We would respectfully ask the moderation team to consider:
- Disambiguating the automod to flag specific unauthorized sellers (Golecha Henna World, Viubiz Impex LLP) rather than the brand name as a whole.
- Reviewing the evidence of authentic Golecha’s certifications, lab tests, and ingredient list — all of which are now public.
- Allowing a representative from Golecha Naturals Pvt Ltd to participate in relevant threads with full disclosure, to answer safety questions directly.
We have great respect for the henna-artist community and the work r/henna does to promote safe practices. We hope to work with you, not against you.
What to do if you’re researching Golecha
